Polarization with a mirror

Here you can discuss different microscopic techniques and illumination methods, such as Brightfield, Darkfield, Phase Contrast, DIC, Oblique illumination, etc.

Polarization with a mirror

#1 Post by Radazz » Sun Dec 17, 2017 4:18 pm

Fiddling about with some of my vintage scopes that use a mirror and external light source this morning, I was musing about using oblique alignment and such, when I began to wonder if I could use polarized light with this form of illumination.
Choosing this late 1950’s B&L model T that was handy.

I mocked up a snoot for this AO 735 illuminator to hold a polarizing filter from my old 35mm camera.
Then I sandwiched an analyzer disk into an extra ocular.

By twisting the eyepiece it is easy to cross the polarization.
However, the only way to photograph it is with my cell phone.

So, it is possible after all.
Enjoy,
