LED vs. Halogen test
LED vs. Halogen test
Here’s a direct comparison.
Zeiss Standard
MD500 5mp eyepiece camera ToupView (some frequency problems)
Illumination
LED - RetroDiode Zeiss Standard replacement illuminator
Halogen - Wild Heerbrugg Hal lamp with transformer
Both fit into a tunnel on the back of the base.
100x
Antique slide Fossil Diatoms Circle Group Wolfish Bay
Diatoms Wolfish Bay LED
Diatoms Wolfish Bay Halogen
Here’s one from Mrsonchus!
Mitosis root tip LED
Mitosis root tip Halogen
35x
Acetaminophen Polarized illumination
Acetaminophen LED
Acetaminophen Halogen
Perhaps I should have run such a test before opening my mouth.
Enjoy,

Re: LED vs. Halogen test
Radazz, I like very much this comparison ! thanks for posting !
Was the LED white (6500K) ? was the LED light filtered ?
On my microscope, equipped with a retroDiode white LED, I use a KR12 warming filter to reduce the bluish-violet tint somewhat.

Re: LED vs. Halogen test
6500k yes.the first one.
Don’t have such a filter.
Also the two microscopes I use for photography are infinity, Olympus IX70 and BX40, both halogen, which sort of widens the gap.

Re: LED vs. Halogen test
Very good, thank you!
The first LED image shows quite a lot of CA compared to the halogen. Is that banding on the slide?
And it's interesting how differently the colours are rendered in the last pair.

Re: LED vs. Halogen test
Hello do you mind if I ask you more specifics on what your setup for the polarized image you posted taken from a Zeiss STd my zeiss does not have the pol knob function installed on the nosepiece limb, I have to hold a polarizer above the eyepiece to get the effect
I have not seen many with that option in the head but old catalogs do show this as available Ive just never seen on for sale.
cheers

Re: LED vs. Halogen test
I bought a retro fit set from an auction site. Polarizer sized to sit on the field lens, and an analyzer that drops into the nose piece above the objectives.

Re: LED vs. Halogen test
That's a cool Idea Very nice
I thought about doing that but no filter I could find was small enough to fit as there is not much room inside the head
the method of holding one of the polarizers between your eye and the eyepiece is pretty precarious esp if you want to take pictures
