Still Looking into Hoffman Optics

Here you can discuss different microscopic techniques and illumination methods, such as Brightfield, Darkfield, Phase Contrast, DIC, Oblique illumination, etc.

Beside the below linked US patent 4,200,353 there is also another patent by US 4,200,354 by Hoffman describing the Hoffman Modulation Contrast (HMC).

Maybe if somebody is interested: below I have linked some german articles about HMC. Second article describes in detail how to get HMC by a DIY approach. Even it is in german language it may have some value by using the google translate software? But be warned, the pdfs below are rather large.

Mikrokosmos, Band 71(11), page 346 (1982) Modulationskontrast
https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/Mikrokosmos_71_0001.pdf

Introduction taken from the article above and translated by google:
"The modulation contrast method was in developed in the USA and is hardly known hear [in Germany]. Most modern microscopes can be converted to modulation contrast, the images are similar to those obtained in differential interference contrast. Our new York employee Eric V. Grave describes the setup necessary for the modulation contrast and shows the results of this new lighting method in some photographs."

Mikrokosmos, Band 72(2), page 58 (1983) Modulationskontrast-Verfahren im Eigenbau:
https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/Mikrokosmos_72_0001.pdf

I have picked the Introduction of the article and used google translate:
"The modulation contrast method described by Eric Grave in November 1982 has below the microcosm readers found great interest. Peter Hoffmann describes a method to build the modulation contrast device by yourself. The success of his method proves his impressive photographs."

Hi ImperatorRex
The Mikrokosmos articles appear to be very good, but they are a difficult job for a non-German speaker to translate, even with the help of Google or Microsoft translation services. I have attempts at translating them tucked away somewhere but the translations are not very lucid. But it is possible to get the sense of the main points; probably enough to do a reasonable job of duplicating the system with a bit of imagination, so they are worthwhile even for non-German speakers.

Olympus has a good page on the technique here: https://www.olympus-lifescience.com/en/ ... s/hoffman/.
Also Hartley discusses the technique in "Microscopy", Vol 33, Jan - June, 1977, page 147.
