Here you can discuss different microscopic techniques and illumination methods, such as Brightfield, Darkfield, Phase Contrast, DIC, Oblique illumination, etc.

Printing Rheinberg filters!

#1 Post by Gasman » Fri Jul 24, 2020 10:05 pm

Hi guys
After many wasted efforts because I had the ‘background’ circle off center under the condenser it seems it’s fairly straightforward to print these filters off when you get the correct dimensions and printer settings. It appears any background/specimen colour combination could be made this way. Note jpegs compressed for the site!
Used at x4 on a slide of Beta-Alanine + L-Glutamine + 💧

How do you determine the dimension of the inner circle?

I had wondered the same thing and found this interesting article which uses a variable iris to determine the size.

It didnt work for me ! I think because my optics were badly aligned in the 'scope I tried it with ( the iris comes in from one side only :( )

You may have better luck than I while we wait for Gasman to come by.

I read this too, but I don't really want to remove my condenser just to take a measurement. I guess I'm just lazy

I printed a few of these off with centre discs from 8mm to 15mm diameter and the 10mm seemed the best for my condenser and seems ok for x4 and x10 lenses. The location of the centre disc is important too as I initially was about 5mm off centre. Another problem I found was the colours were not intense enough so selecting HD settings in the printer and choosing ultra glossy paper seems to have solved that although another solution could be if the colours are too weak maybe piggyback 2 or 3 filters!

Thanks Gasman, that corresponds perfectly with my experience with darkfield with this scope
