Hi just starting in Microscopie Almere The Netherlands
As a kid 50 years ago i had a microscope , had not done anything after that so that' a distant memory
But now i got interested because i have Koi
and had to pay 50€ tot a fish dokter to come by with his microscope to determine the treatment
by identifying the parasite
In the end he got it wrong and 5 more of my koi died
So after a few weeks i went with a sick fish to a koy merchant
Who identified the real perpetrator and correct treatment with again a microscope
So i got interested
I also have a aquarium
Went to a professional microscope store in Zaandam with very nice professionals
looked thru some professional microscopes,
and was asked what my purpose and budget was
I was told to bring at least 350€ for the cheapest used microscope they had
and that anything els would be a waste of money and a disappointment
I wasent sure, i remembered that i had a lot of fun with my first kids microscope
I was still exited and interested so after watching some of the youtube videos
i got myself a inexpensive 56€ microscope from china
It arrived 3 days ago
I am not disappointed .
Its much beter than my first microscope but has it limitations
A little bit disappointing is the WF16X (9mm) oculair with a very schort eye relief that came with it
compared to the
I ware glasses
Cant expect much for what i payed- i see they cost like 3,50€ on Ali
Now im considering should i get a second beter ? eye piece is it worth it
like a WF10X 22mm 23,2 diameter eyepiece
Is that beter than a WF 10X 18mm
What dose the spectacle symbol meen
Sill have a lot of questions
Nice to see my aquarium filter debris is teaming with life !
but are any of them harmful to my fish ?
Sill have a lot of questions
probably for a different forum
But now you know my initial intrest

Hi,
welcome to the forum!
Eyepieces with "glasses" symbol are for people who use the microscope with glasses on. I wear glasses, but take them off when I look through the microscope.
The eye relief can be better on a new eyepiece, don't expect much other improvements.
Woukd you like to show a picture of your microscope and the objects you look at?
Whith which name can we address you?
Bob

Hello Baboon. The numbering system on microscope eyepieces is only partially universal. The number following the actual magnification can be confusing, because sometimes it is the field of view being designated and sometimes it is the eye relief and sometimes it is the diameter of the eyepiece tube. To confuse everything further, microscope objective lens systems, can also require that the eyepieces used with them, be made according to a certain design in order to work properly.
Swapping eyepieces around willy nilly can result in poorer performance.
Generally :
There are two eyepiece diameters used for standard microscopes above a toy or hobby grade. 23.2mm( sometimes abbreviated to 23mm) and 30mm.
The magnification is marked with an X following it but not always.
The field of view or f.o.v. is often not marked on the eyepiece. The f.o.v. can be known from a catalogue or by a dealer, without it being marked.
The f.o.v. for a 23.2mm eyepiece is very rarely 22mm. Almost all are 30 mm barrels. There is one instance I know of where a marking of 22mm is on the eyepiece and this in fact is the eye relief.
A second number followed by mm is often the eye relief.

That may sound like a lot (it is in fact the average entry fee to this hobby) but that really depends on what they were offering.I was told to bring at least 350€ for the cheapest used microscope they had

Don't suppose you remember what they suggested?
Perhaps another visit in the near future with a camera/phone should be your next step, assuming of course you have been bitten by the microscope bug.

Hi Bob,
of your images just the one with the microscope is visible for me.
Generally the eyepiece can't extract more out of the image than the objective has resolved, so it is usually best to use 10x eyepieces.
If you can arrange with the current eyepiece, I would suggest to just use it and gain some experience befor you buy new stuff. This microscope is not really meant to be upgraded and a better eyepiece might just show up other weak areas. Like putting a Suzuki Haysbusa motor into a Citroen 2CV.
Generally the quality of the microscope is more important the higher the used magnification is. So you can probably get the best of it by using it with the lower power objectives.
I too suffered from toy microscopes of the 1970s and 80s! I can imagine that your microscope is quite a lot better then them.
These are free hand sections, cut with a cutter knife blade and photographed with objectives 6,3:1 and 10:1, only the stoma was photographed with a 40:1: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8206

Always nice to be able address some one by their name, instead of some strange 'pseudonym', much more friendly.
Enjoy the forum, and your new microscope.
