Hello and greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

#1 Post by bkwoo » Tue May 12, 2020 4:40 am

Hello and greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I have been a registered user since February 2020 and have been lurking around this forum for quite some time.

My name is B.K. Woo and back in the old days in the States, the Americans just called me "Boon".

I was thrust into amateur microscopy-fluorescence microscopy-DAPI filter starting back in January 2019.

I have to say this, I do not own any fluorescence microscope nor do I know how to operate one. My formal education background is not a biology science degree, in fact, it is through my chemistry work that sets me down the path to fluorescence microscopy. So a "Big Yes" that I am a total newbie to the fascinating world of biological microscopic world and micro-organisms identifications is not my forte.
I am not a microscope engineer who can tinker and improvise microscope's hardware part nor am I, a software programming expert.

Unlike most MicrobeHunter members here, I am afraid that I do not have any detailed technical specs to share about my microscope (no picture either) but I be happy to share with you all, my experiences and my journey as an amateur microscopist-fluorescence microscopy-DAPI filter from January 2019 to February 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic struck (lockdown imposed).

Perhaps I will do this under Pictures and Videos topic.

Now I am looking forward in finding other amateurs with the same interests (the art of fluorescence microscopy-amateur level) and I thank you all for your kind attention.

Best,
BKWoo

Welcome to the forum

I, for one, look forward to learning from your experience with fluorescence.
... an area very little known to me, but rather intriguing.

Thank you all for your welcome comments.

Partial lockdown extension to June 9th and university lab closes.
On lighter note...here is how Ellen Ripley becomes an aliens hunter, oops..a MicrobeHunter, an amateur microscopist after receiving valuable mentoring lesson from Corporal Hicks, the professional microscopist.

Hicks: Hey..I want to introduce you to a personal friend, this is a fluorescence microscope model ....blah..blah.. touch its elegance.

Ripley (touching the fluorescence microscope) : Okay. What do I do?

Hicks: Okay...blah..blah..get another microscope slide in quick, slide it hard and you are ready to rock and roll.

Ripley: What is this?

Hicks: That is DAPI filter, I don't think you want to mess with that.

Ripley: You started this, show me everything. I can handle myself.

Hicks: Yeah, I noticed.

I always like Private Hudson's line in this movie. :)
