Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
Hi everyone
I have one of these Nikon turrets with 4 prisms:
I was just wondering if anyone on here has experience of using one? If so, do you know if I can use it with a 'standard' Nikon CF M Plan objective or do I absolutely have to have a DIC version? (which I can't find anywhere!), or are there other options/makes that will facilitate the reflective DIC? I've tried with a 10x plan fluor but I didn't see a definite DIC. At the same time I appreciate the two-way light path has to be the same length so would expect to need an M Plan of some sort.
Many thanks
Louise

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
DIC marked Mplans are guaranteed to be strain free, but are otherwise identical to regular Mplans. Very few of the objectives I've tried with DIC have suffered from strain, so I would think that virtually all regular Mplans will perform perfectly fine with these prisms.

Yeah you can use any mplan. Epi DIC is a lot less picky so your odds of getting an accidental or partial match are higher than transmitted dic too.

OK - thanks guys! I'll try and get some in
Um, am I right in thinking non-M Plan wouldn't be expected to work?
Cheers

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
They might, but with a Nikon finite metallurgical setup it is awkward to find out because the illuminator just has empty space in it and demands 210mm objectives and 160mm objectives will be pushed way out of spec. There aren't too many non-nikon 210 objectives. That said Nikon also made infinity metallurgical setups as part of the same system so if you used one of those illuminators instead with an infinity head you would have a lot more room for experimentation.

The turret is actually fitted to my diy infinity system... Bit of a Frankenscope, I suppose!Scarodactyl wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 6:00 pmThey might, but with a Nikon finite metallurgical setup it is awkward to find out because the illuminator just has empty space in it and demands 210mm objectives and 160mm objectives will be pushed way out of spec. Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
Do I need to convert it back to a finite system for the DIC to work?
Thanks

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
It will probably work just fine with an infinity system.
Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
It can be determined that it is suitable for transmission light finite far systems.LouiseScot wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 11:12 amHi everyone

By the way, how much did it cost you?
I happen to have a set of articles on AH DIC condenser .

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
Thanks again, guys!
I bought it on an Ebay auction a couple of years ago but I've not done any microscopy stuff for a year. I got it for £290 in the auction - seemed reasonable I can see the expected interference pattern through the ocular but haven't been able to properly see a DIC image. But that was with a non M Plan/EPI plan objective which is why I was asking the question. I've seen a Nikon finite M Plan (but non DIC) 10x objective on Ebay, and I've seen some Chinese CF EPI Plan ELWD 20x infinity objectives (a lot more expensive). Which to get? Hmm.. I suppose I should stick with the infinity spec to try out.
Cheers

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
I suddenly remembered I have a clone LMPlan 5X inf in place. I'd forgotten! That's what you get when you don't do something for a year especially when you're elderly! I have to remember and relearn everything!
Anyway, I took a quick pic of some aluminium kitchen foil:
Any opinions? Maybe it's working? Worth getting some more of the LMPlan clones?
I clearly need to improve the illumination - a bit dark around the periphery! I did the exposure by just pressing the button - not ideal! I'll have to get properly set up for photomicrography again
Thanks
Louise
