Hi Michael,
do you happen to know the number of this DIN norm?

I think the DIN was 9345, Bob
... latterly issued as ISO
https://www.iso.org/standard/61065.html

and here’s a link to the current [2019] version:
https://www.iso.org/standard/70798.html

Thank you Michael!
I had been looking for this norm but wasn't able to find it then. This norm is stated everywhere but few people actually have read it or at least have it available. Unfortunately norms are not available for free..

That's why I thought it useful to post the handy diagram, from an accessible source

Unfortunately, D.I.N. is often misunderstood as being a standard of quality rather than as a dimensional standard. Some D.I.N. microscopes are truly dreadfull while some of other varying dimensions are truly great.

Agreed ... 9345 does not specify a standard of quality per se ; but it does at least set tolerances for those significant dimensions.

+/- 0.5 mm for the 150 and 160 mm lengths, and
+/- 0.3 mm for the 10mm [eyepiece parfocalizing]

These norms are revised in regular intervals, so there is cost involved. In Germany the Beuth Verlag has the copyright and manages thes revision processes. As a consumer one thinks that all this is done to consumers benefit. But the comittees are mainly assembled for representatives of the market players and they work on improving their profit. Since all market players have different angles on the market it is a lot of haggling to come to decisions. Once a norm is a EN or ISO it is very difficult to change it or adapt it to changes market situations.
