I never looked closely at one of these. It's an inverted upright. I think the stage z-moves for focus.

The idea was, to appeal to customers that were kind of stuck on the design of an upright microscope. I made one out of an upside down series 10 a couple of years ago for April Fool's day. Neither design was very popular.
