This may be a source of confusion... my understanding is the the collimator is called the collimator because it "provides an image of field iris F1 at infinity." (Wording used in the patent.) It does not collimate the actual light source. The filament/arc/whatever is focused "in the region of condenser front pupil plane F2." (Actually somewhat in front of it according to Brian's simulation and my tests.)
