Leica redesigns their stereo lineup (and it's their ugliest yet!)

#1 Post by Scarodactyl » Thu Aug 24, 2023 7:28 pm

Let's cut right to the chase.
Image
The new Leica Ivesta 3. Thanks to Martin Microscope for posting about this on fb--per them this is just the S9 series in a new shell and with a worse name.
This is frankly the laziest, ugliest design work I have seen in a stereo. It looks like it was generated with one click in some sort of cad software. It looks like when Chinese companies design a shell for a stereo microscope copying a major brand that they've changed the eyepiece configuration on enough that they can't copy the shell. Oddly specific yes but see exhibits A and B:

Yes, Leica is copying the direction of Chinese knockoff stereo visual design (and somehow doing it worse).
Leica has always had the ugliest stereos to be fair--not every model but many. Remember classics like the GZ4, nowadays almost always seen in a mustard yellow
Image
The EZ4's clunky yet uncharming look (with optional growth to hide a camera that was underspecced before you bought it)
Image
The excessively vertical cylindricality of the S7 and s9 series.
Image
Or whatever the heck is going on with the A60
Image
But you know what, all of them were at least interesting to gawk at and felt like some thought went into their look, and for every visual failure there's been a much nicer looking design. But this is really the worst.
Anyway those are my thoughts.

Yikes - they are ugly. Different aesthetic, but it's the equivalent of putting tailfins on automobiles -- there just in the hope of churning sales of newer models

Uglier in black than in white. We are too much accustomed to classic design though.

I dunno....I think that head looks better on a different body.

Always get to the camel train first.
Wouldn't want to get stuck with an ugly one.

It is interesting that the new greenough platform falls completely away from any recognizable styling of earlier models. If you take a look at the S7E and the A60, there is a distinct swoop along the side that mimics the angularity of the CMO M series viewing tubes. I agree these new bodies are less intriguing and rather bland.

Wow! No kidding... What are they smocking there at Leica? It's not just THEIR ugliest yet, it the ugliest of ALL stereo microscopes! They just made a bar of soap shaped like their A60 educational model, and washed their hands a few times...

Those are stealth microscopes or Stealthscopes. Perfectly aligned with your stealth & welfare in mind. Actually , I heard that they partnered with BMW in the collective purchase of the flat black spaceage enamel for those. Next step is to break the patents on Vantablack. Covert stereomicroscopy at night during a nuclear winter would be like a walk in the park.
Nope, those are definitely not piston powered but the exquisite imaginings of a modern day gen x Galileo whose curtains definitely don't match the carpet. Wait! .... there isn't even a carpet !

We're in trouble online. Look at this user above, aaronramsdale. All his posts are fairly relevant to a given thread, almost natural, but if you read through them you start to get that chat-gpt stink off of them. And as expected there are links hidden in his posts. This is so much more sophisticated than what we were dealing with even a year ago.
