Thoughts on these microscopes for sale on Facebook appreciated

#1 Post by Sinar » Tue Dec 19, 2023 7:18 pm

I noticed these for sale in a local Facebook group (England), they want £250 for all pictured (about $310), it seems cheap but I wondered if I’d need to spend a lot to get them actually working, thoughts appreciated.

To be honest I don’t “need” another microscope, but if it ended up as a cheap project to get a few more…

The Nikon Labophot might be more work than it's worth. It seems to have a single 10x objective, a busted plastic cover, likely a broken rear lamp, and nearly as likely (quite common) a broken plastic fine focus gear. All fixable, but not easily or especially affordably to get the gear and objectives needed.

The Leica inverted scope is more interesting if it's in good shape. Leica infinity objectives are pricey, though, and it isn't clear which ones, if any, this comes with. A bargain if it includes a good complement.

Definitely a junk pile of projects.
If the labophot 2 PSU is working it may be viable, Labophot 2 complete with failed PSU are cheap and abundant.

Just the DIC condenser is easily worth the £250.

That's a hoffman modulation contrast condenser, not DIC. Not sure how popular they are.

Then why does one condenser position say 'DIC'?

I'm certainly not an expert on Leica scopes of this era.

Edit: the one mounted on the scope is of course a Hoffman condenser. I'm referring to the one mounted to the column on the table, which looks like associated with the Zeiss eyepieces.

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like they need a lot of work, and I’m new to microscopes so probably won’t have the skills needed, also buying objectives might end up being costly, I think I’ll leave them for someone more competent to buy.
