Selling old Leitz Laborlux or SM?

#1 Post by Gclef » Wed Feb 28, 2024 7:09 pm

Hi.....
I mostly do astronomy and enjoy the visual part, not imaging. At any rate I picked up a complete Leitz microscope set up.
I think the model is Laborlux or SM. It has many attachments and oculars (eyepieces).
Any idea what it's worth?

Comes with.....
Two diaphragm bright field condenser...#-74 A 0.95
Phase contrast condenser....#74. Heine with oil cap.
Dark field condenser.....#84 D 0.80
Extra ocular pairs...... Two sets 10x Periplan, and one set no name 6x

4 Objectives on turret ...3.5, 10, 25, 45, and a 100 in a plastic tube.

Plus some other stuff.....camera attachments, wooden box with all the accessories.

Any ideas also where to sell all of it?

Thanks, Gerry

Many pics .....but they seem too large to attach here.
Any suggestions?

Anyone else have an idea on what would be a good price for this microscope?

Sorry, but this is a real How long is a piece of string ? question

Look at some Leitz prices and you will soon realise that one objective could be worth more than another complete Laborlux.
… it all depends [in great detail] what you have, and in what condition.

You can reduce the size of your images and upload directly, or use an external image hosting site and attach here

Thanks....but looking at Leitz's for sale and individual pieces I only see items that haven't been sold. Most probably because the asking price is too high. Those that would have given me a real idea of what I have and their reasonable value to someone were deleted due to being sold. Catch 22.

I'll try and downsize my images as I'm sure someone here has a good idea of real world sale prices.

You can also search sold listings on eBay. They go back a decent ways.

I am not a leitz expert but I think you have a Heine condenser there which is sonewhat sought after.

It looks like your Heine is missing its (oil immersion) top lens.

Nice looking scope. It does have the Heine condenser, missing it's top oil lens, as noted above. The dry darkfield condenser is also useful.

Depending upon the objectives (plan? phase? fluorite? apo?), I'd think it would be worth $700-800 plus or minus to the right buyer; possibly to someone here. You might get a bit more on eBay, but end up losing a bunch on fees. You might also check "sold" listings. Here's one that sold for a bit over $300, with a trinocular head: https://www.ebay.com/itm/203962191143

Someone wanting to seriously use this will likely want to substitute a brighter lamp and add a trinocular head - and begin a likely frustrating search for that oil cap.

This is no Laborlux it is the smaller Leitz SM. The Laborlux had build-in illumination. It is nicely equipped with binoculars, Berek condenser and a good stage but it looks like the mirror is missing.

The Heine alone will sell for more than the microscope. The dark-field condenser will sell easily as well.

Up to 200 for the scope.
300 for the Heine, even without the immersion cap maybe 400 with it.
Up to 100 for the dark-field condenser. Cleaning it may be a good idea.

That's what I would expect to achieve. May take some time to sell.

Do you have any objectives for the Heine? They are marked "PV".

I would like to buy that top-lens marked "Nur für Oel". PM me if you are interested.

The cap will help you get a quicker sale, towards the higher end of the range. As Alexander says, the value is in the condenser - which you might sell separately.

Just a quick clarification :

Perhaps contrary to the instinctive reading … Nur für means Only for
