AO 110 opportunity!
Re: AO 110 opportunity!
I have already been to the xmission.com website for other things and, Yes, from what I've seen so far it is a great resource. I will go back and look for the things that have been specified above. As far as the axillary lens in the condenser, how will I know whether it's there or not by looking at it? The microscope arrives this afternoon. I should have it by the time you read this. Will PM the three of you when it is unboxed. Thank you all for all of the help that you have given so far, especially with the catalog numbers. They help tremendously.

Re: AO 110 opportunity!
On the bottom of the # 1087 condenser, there will be either one of two things. 1) 2 holes or 2) a lens that swings in and out horizontally, in a little black surround with a handle attached. If the lens is not there, when you find one, it attaches to one of the two holes with a screw and washer and the other hole holds an adjustable cam stop. There are 6 parts required. 1 lens, 1 cam, 2 screws, 1 collar washer, and 1 spacer washer. I will do my best to help you with this , if your condenser does not have one , already.cpsTN wrote:I have already been to the xmission.com website for other things and, Yes, from what I've seen so far it is a great resource. Am I to take this to mean that the lens swings out so it can be used when needed, with a 4x objective for instance, and swung out when not needed?apochronaut wrote:On the bottom of the # 1087 condenser, there will be either one of two things. 1) 2 holes or 2) a lens that swings in and out horizontally, in a little black surround with a handle attached. The 801 10 has arrived and everything looks great especially the Optics. I can't seem to get any any pictures on here either of the scope or through the eyepiece because no matter how small I get them even if it's less than 512k it says it's too big. So I guess they just don't want anyone posting pictures.

I think it has to do with the horizontal and vertical size rather than the digital size.. Maybe try and resize some more?cpsTN wrote:The 801 10 has arrived and everything looks great especially the Optics. Re: AO 110 opportunity!
The AO110 has arrived and it's more scope and I thought it was going to be. I have questions about the condensers. The dark field condenser seems to be too dark regardless of how bright the Illuminator the setting is. Also, the screws that hold the bright-field condenser in place don't seem to be needed for the dark field condenser. Also the dark field condenser seems to have its own holding screws in place so do I just put it in and it stays there? Also, since the condenser height is adjustable to a large degree, I don't know where to put it when I'm viewing. Do I just experiment with different heights and different diaphragm openings until I get the best view or are there guide lines? I will look into those options as far as the pictures are concerned, and post some HERE soon.

Re: AO 110 opportunity!
Condenser should be nearly at the top of its vertical range, about 1mm or 2mm below the slide. Also, since the condenser height is adjustable to a large degree, I don't know where to put it when I'm viewing.
When you set up Köhler correctly that is where the field diaphragm will be in focus.
Can't help with the rest as I do not own an AO
Do try and get the images working, it is sometimes helpful to show what one is referring to.

Re: AO 110 opportunity!
If you follow the procedure for Kohler, your brightfield condenser will be perfectly positioned.
That same procedure will also address proper diaphragm settings, both field and condenser.
In order to get an image with the darkfield condenser, it MUST be oiled to the slide, so obviously it will be positioned very close to the slide.
For darkfield your field diaphragm will be wide open.
To use any objective with a NA higher than about 60, will require a funnel stop in the objective or one with an iris.

Re: AO 110 opportunity!
Cool. I suppose the condenser height is adjustable only to allow for it's removal? I'm not used to such high-quality optics. I went up to the 100x objective and everything was in focus and easily visible. There was no problem at that power at all. This might sound like a dumb question, but am I really seeing this object at 1000x. I just quickly went to it to see how it looked. I didn't use oil. I thought nothing would come into focus without the oil when using an oil objective. Regardless, oil or not, it seems too easy to reach focus at 1000x. I am skeptical.

Darkfield condenser needs to be perfectly centered, using those adjustment screws. If off too much, image will be very dark.

Sounds like you have the wrong DF condenser. The condenser should have AO 1096 written on it, There should be no adjustable part on the condenser at all. All of the adjustments are in the substage carrier.

I have a terrible history of getting photos onto this site. They are either too tall, too short, too wide, too fat, too something. I managed to get a link to Facebook on my last post to show the microscope itself but now I can't seem to do it again for the condenser. And I'm not going to go through the hassle of uploading to another website just to occasionally show photos here so I don't know what to do. Re: AO 110 opportunity!
received the pictures, Charles.
As I suspected your condenser is a 214F , which was made for the
earlier series of microscopes, the 10/20 series. They can be made to
work with a little fiddling on a 100 series, usually and are an excellent condenser but
the correct condenser # 1096 is a little better and provides a full
field, down to the 20X objective..

I am aware of how the math works. I was asking because I'm not used to 1000x being so easy to view as far as focus, brightness and FOV.75RR wrote:It does need some adjusting but that is why it has such a large range.I suppose the condenser height is adjustable only to allow for it's removal?

Did not mean anything by that. It was just the use of the word skeptical that prompted me to state the formula.Regardless, oil or not, it seems too easy to reach focus at 1000x. I am skeptical.

Re: AO 110 opportunity!
I apologize. I did not mean anything by what I said either. I realize now, after reading it, that it must have sounded rude. The reason I was skeptical is because with the lower-grade scopes that I'm used to using, 1000x was always dubious at best, dim, not the greatest focus and hard to maintain. So, when I saw that 1000x with the AO was so easy to reach and see, I didn't believe that I had that magnification at first. I don't need 1000x very often, but it's nice to know it's there when I can use it. For me, 450 or 500x (both which I have, 50x oil with iris) is more than enough.
