Nikon Labophot 2 undercarriage filters

The Nikon Labophot 2 has a small cartridge type system underneath, that houses two filters. One appears to be a 45mm diffuser, the other has a sort of cross-hatching pattern. Do they both work as diffusers together, or is one a heat filter?

I should welcome an explanation. In some of the manuals, a 'lemon-skin' diffuser is mentioned, but of 33mm diameter, and fitting next to the bulb.
