New inverted microscope.

#1 Post by apochronaut » Mon Apr 01, 2019 7:25 pm

I finally got an inverted microscope. I haven't seen one like this in any catalogues. Perhaps it is a prototype?
Has most of the features of the standard upright microscopes of it's day and seems quite flexible as to objective types it can take. It didn't come with any but everyone I have tried seems to work as well as the next.
Has a nice flat top so you can keep apparatus there or a coffee.

Phil, Pretty sure that's the American Optical Series 01, being upside down and all. I believe, at least today, that you should be able to get a bit of fluorescence out of it, because the photons are now being accelerated by gravity.

Congratulations! I like its compactness, relative to other inverted microscopes.
Questions please:
1. Which knob lowers and raises the condenser ?
2. Which light source and where is it located ? on the flat top ?
3. is there a camera port ?

Pete; you may be correct about the model #. I had a look in my old manuals etc. and found an old AO catalogue from 1964 or so and when I hold it upside down it says : 01 seires…...that word must be a typo! They probably had an apprentice in the print shop.
Photons and gravity eh? Hadn't considered that . Maybe , if I close the condenser diaphragm it would slow them down a little?....but the idea of a fluorescent inverted microscope intrigues me . What colour would you choose; lurid green or the fuschia?

Hobbyist. The lamp is an 18 watt tungsten , located in the upper section behind the condenser. Condenser focus eh? I'll get back to you on that. I just got it...delivered today on April 1, so I'm not perfectly conversant with it's operation yet.
Yes it can have a camera port, I know that much. It came with the standard binocular head but I'm pretty sure it can just be swapped out for a trinocular.

I have now given up my own plans for a new design of inverted microscope. No way I can compete with this. Yours doesn't require an inverted operator like mine did (I wonder if it's too late to return the Barcalounger...)

Well done.

BTW, I suggest the Model number is 0401.

What a strange looking inverted. Phil- I thought you have had several Biostars in the past.

This one has a smaller headprint.

Hi Phil,
this really is a useful microscope with several advantages: The big top plate keeps the dust of the optics very well, it requires little desk space and the automatic hydraulic photo tube lift saves your back by changeing the height frequently. A real gem for your collection!
