Wild M420 Macroscope Illumination

#1 Post by Rainowman » Thu May 02, 2019 2:41 pm

I have a Wild M420 Makroscope mounted on a Wild Heerbrugg transilluminating base which is equipped for bright field and dark field.
The light source is a 12V, 100W, 3100 kelvin halogen bulb. The unit still has its original fan which works fine but produces a rather annoying background hum.
I would like to convert the light source to an LED/SMD of similar light intensity but in the 6000K area of the spectrum. I have this kind of illuminator on my Orthoplan, bought from RetroDiode in USA, which gives excellent illumination (highly recommended).
Has anyone any experience or suggestions as to how this conversion could be carried out. Does an SMD need a driver and heat sink and where could I source the necessary components, bearing in mind that space within the base is limited. As you may have gathered I am not an expert in electronics.
