Opening Zeiss 47 30 28 Trinocular Head

#1 Post by 75RR » Thu Oct 10, 2019 5:18 pm

Anyone know how to remove the binocular side covers?

There do not seem to be any screws, just a dimple top and bottom. Push on pull off?

I don't know for sure, but it certainly looks like those dimples are 'location catches'
... if it was mine, I would just pull gently

I have taken off similar but not identical covers. They pulled of with a snap. Don't throw your expensive trino around.
You might whittle a piece of nylon or PE/PP to the right shape and apply leverage at the seams.

Thanks MichaelG and MicroBob

Have been tugging it without any success - wanted confirmation before putting more muscle into it. Will take that as a go!

What is you strategy for cleaning it?

Today I am very reluctant to open it but in the past I would spend entire days disassembling, cleaning, reassembling, centering and so on (probably a very bad idea but I guess I learn). Instead I try to maintain low amounts of dust in the room where I keep the microscope, for this I use an air cleaning HEPA filter which works extremely well.

That is much the best idea.

I have the window open so I don't think an air filter will do it. Surprising how much dust is carried by the wind.

In this case though I was on an inspection. Seemed quite clean actually, will have to look elsewhere for the culprits.

Finding that one speck of dirt which always get on your photos can be a very challenging task. Have you ruled out the eyepiece, relay lens and sensor (you can get an idea by individually rotating the camera but not the eyepiece)?

Thanks Wes, will be working my way through them. Pretty sure there is more than one guilty party given the state of the image background.

Talking about one spec that can't be easily got rid of, there is a mark on the lamphouse diffusion disk.
Unfortunately it seems that a substitute disk is the only solution to that particular blemish.
