Early patents related to phase contrast

A couple of patents related to the early years of the development of phase microscopy.

1942 application /1947 grant

Hi Phil,
in the first American Optical patent names several patents from 1907 onwards. It would be interesting to research how much invention Zernike actually did.

It all started with this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8158 in which a consensus was reached that DIC did not make Phase obsolete.

then another thread based on a link to an illumination technique called Relief Phase posted in the first thread was started: viewtopic.php?f=28&p=71653#p71596

This thread was a little ragged, with members speculating on whether Zernike dressed to the left or the right and in what year Phase was commercially available; turns out it was 1941.

lastly this thread with links to Phase patents was subsequently posted.
