Dale...AO 10 Phase Set

#1 Post by Charles » Fri May 08, 2015 11:27 pm

Dale, Here is the AO 10 Phase set. Condenser with four annuli, the three phase plan objectives (10, 20 and 40) and the inline Bertrand lens for aligning phase.

Is that blue thing on the right the phase telescope? I thought they were tubular and slipped into the eyepiece tube?

The Bertrand lens serves the same purpose as the phase telescope in a more permanent fashion in that it is installed just below the viewing body and the lens is put into the light path and focused when you want to check the phase alignment. AO made a very good phase system.

Is there going to be a bidding war ???

Noooooo, I just bought it. I have downloaded a lot of articles on how to use phase contrast , but none of them show
anything but a phase telescope. I know what I should see when it is aligned, and I guess I can fiddle it into position.
Do you know where I might get info on this particular setup? I would look myself but I must get the gas fireplace fixed
before the wifey gets home. Why can't the dang thing just burn all the cat hair and wool rug fuzz it sucks in? :(

Thank you so much, and the fireplace is fixed.
Now I have to deliver a king size bed from Seattle to Portland. It is to promote the W.A.F.

That doesn't look familiar but it looks like this part on the phase condenser, which is the stop for the auxillary lens. Is it still on the phase condenser?

That is it! The condenser has one in place. I will mail this mystery nut back to you.
I did not want to start installing the set with unknown parts. Needless to say I did not
examine the condenser or the nut would have seen the nut.

Dale, Don't worry about sending the nut back. Not worth the postage. Perhaps it goes to something else. The bag I used, use to contain some parts for a Wild microscope I just purchased but I don't see where it might have come from. If I find out and need it, I'll let you know.

Roger that. I'll put it somewhere safe, like in my box of 'chuck' keys.

That little mystery part is an alignment cam for the auxiliary lens. Usually the AO phase condensers don't need it because the 4 phase objectives 10,20, 40 or 45, and 100 have fields that are well filled by the standard condenser unit. Some of the mics had a 5 hole nosepiece and a cat.# 1075( achro),1017( planachro) or later 1127(adv. planachro) need the wider angle.

There is a special shouldered machine screw, thin wafer washer and flat washer, that go with it so it can be rotated eccentrically so as to stop the swinging aux. lens at the point of correct alignment.

Thanks for the description Apo,
Dale has a 4X, and since he wasn't planning on using the 100X phase, I figured the auxillary lens would be useful for his 4X.

If the 100x phase annulus is intact, the 4x coupled with it gives an excellent low power darkfield : some diatoms , pictured here with a # 1017 and 100x annulus.
