Zeiss Standard Microscope and Mirror Woes

#1 Post by Lutra87 » Sun Apr 12, 2020 3:49 pm

Has anybody tried this quick and dirty method of making a FSM?

My Zeiss standard has a 45 degree mirror that is completely shot. I have an old mirror laying around from a recent bathroom remodel and figured i'd give it a try.

Looks worth a try! That said fsms can often be had on eBay or similar in a variety of dimensions for reasonable prices.

I think it is the best and cheapest solution.
Important to remember that the mirror must be perfectly flat.

Thanks! Yeah I read this post before. My only concern is that shipping from China may be delayed right now due to current events and I'm pretty impatient!

If you try the old home mirror path, verify that it is not too thick.

So I ended up ordering both the stainless dental mirror (which will get here next month) and these :

I'll try removing the quick and dirty method of producing an FSM on these and let you know how it goes.

Another possible option is a secondary mirror for a newtonian telescope or the mirror in a 90 degree diagonal . Also, your old mirror can be recoated.
