Microscopes in the Movies

#1 Post by JGardner » Wed May 06, 2020 9:40 pm

I just watched a miniseries called The Hot Zone about an Ebola outbreak in Reston Virginia. Among others, this movie featured the use of Zeiss Universal microscopes, electron microscopes, and ultramicrotomes.

I've watched a few other pandemic-themed movies recently and many of them have glaring errors like using light microscopes to image viruses (and some of these viruses even appear to be motile!)

Anyone spot microscopes in other movies?

The makers of those movies should consult this forum. It would prevent a lot of nonsense and mis-education.

They blow up an AO compound in Blade (or maybe Blade II).
They had a couple in Hobbs and Shaw, inclusing either a vintage Olynpus SZ or a clone thereof, which seemed like a good authentic pick for a general science lab. Thr cheqp monocular compound less so.

This isn't a movie, but I'm still wondering what make and model made it to the future in the year 2151:

Probably a big novelty case for his boring, tiny dna analyzer using a retro style.

In the hideous prequel The Thing (2011) they have a Zeiss Universal and show some CGI phase contrast of alien cells doing stuff to non-alien cells.

In Species 2 they show actual phase contrast footage of phagocytosis.
