Leitz PL 1x

#1 Post by Sabatini » Wed Jul 08, 2020 9:41 pm

I am being offered for sale these two objetives,
a Leitz PL 1x / 170 na 0.04 $ 65

Leitz PL 1.6x / 160 na 0.05 $ 45

I am really quite undecided about which one to buy. It would be very helpful to have some guidance as to which would be the best decision, I understand that we are facing a topic of benefits, needs and own tastes, but I would appreciate a recommendation from someone who has experience in this type of objetives and their uses.

Thank you at all.

May I suggest you read this thread regarding the Leitz 1x objective:

viewtopic.php?t=5461

The upshot is that the 1x lens requires a special low-power condenser. And it's not common. I am not sure if the 1.6x requires this as well, or maybe you can get away with simply removing your condenser when using this objective. Someone here will know.

Also, I see you have one lens marked with 160 and one with 170. This is the tube length in mm, specific to your microscope. For higher power objectives (at least 16x) Leitz said they were interchangeable, but for lower power objectives like this, you will need to match the objective to your tube length. So in any case, only one of these lenses will work optimally on your scope.

I have chance to use both tube length.
Thank you very much for your attention, it has served to enlighten me greatly on this subject.

It was very helpful!!!.

If I were you, I'd buy them both for those very reasonable prices and worry about the logistics later. The 'special' condenser does occasionally appear for sale and as the Leitz has a slide-in mount it takes only a second to swap-out the std one and of course to turn the knob that swing's the built-in collector lens out of the light-path. Both very handy and at a good price?

I had to look back at the opening post, to spot the prices
... couldn’t agree more, John

As for the logistics, Sabatini :
If you buy both, but only need one, I would be interested in the other.

Msonchus.
Thank you very much for your recommendations, the truth is that they are very accessible at that price, it would be good to try them in other stands as well, but in your post you didn't finally clarify if you kept the objetive or returned it. What happened?

I'm going to try to buy both of them, MichaelG, when I have them at home I'll let you know.

Thank you.

I never found a 1x - and a while back now moved over to Olympus (the shame...... ) as I wanted to move to the newer generation/s of optics and I had a little spare money. My Leitz was a beautiful Orthoplan - a fantastic 'scope with beautiful optics - some of the type that I can't even dream of affording for my Olympus BX50!

Good luck (go-get 'em!).

Cripes old chap - you're right!
Completely forgotten that saga.
I wish I'd known then what I know now - an old story that!

I wonder if I remembered to swing out the collector lens, probably did but that may have made a difference if I hadn't.

Must have a look through my images for some sort of record of the time - maybe some info there.

Cordial greetings

Well, finally the lens arrived, I tried it and it's very nice, with very contrasted images, good colors and quite flat, I still have to play more with it. The other Leitz 1x with diaphragm I'm still in negotiation to see if I can buy it, we'll see.

Thanks for the recommendations.
