B+L StereoZoom models (?)

#1 Post by Zuul » Thu Jul 23, 2020 6:10 pm

When the topic of stereo scopes comes up, Bausch + Lomb often percolates to the top of the discussion. But with the exception of identifying various older models, it seems like the StereoZoom 7 is the only one that gets talked about. It is so far superior that the others aren't that interesting? Did it mark a generational step forward? I understand it has a larger magnification range, but is that all that separates it from the StereoZoom 5, for instance?

* I'm not particularly in the market for a stereo. This is just curiosity and wanting to learn a little more about the history of microscopes in general.

The sz7 was a resesrxh-grade head, and has significantly higher resolution (300 lp/mm, 600 with the 2x!!) than its siblings or most any modern scope in its niche. Combined with 15x uwf eyepieces you also get an impressively big and well-corrected image. Not apo by any means but good. The other members of the series are routine stereos, quite nice for that kind of usage.
