When I look at the cucumber I wonder what all the fuss is about biologically. The fruit is essentially a collection of water bags. The biological usefulness of the plant is very subtle, essentially hidden. The reproduction part of the fruit is hard to see--but it is the nearly transparent seed-making mechanism. The fruit is essentially connected bags of water. But the microscope reveals some structures which are hard to figure out. That's what makes the cucumber interesting.

I’m always amazed how the microscope can reveal the mysteries of nature. Even the humble cucumber has secrets to reveal under our microscopes. Wonderful!
