Microbe Aquarium Videos

#1 Post by BrianBurnes » Sun Nov 08, 2020 5:26 am

A few videos from a piece of forest pond transplanted into a microbe aquarium and left to grow for a week. Microstar IV, Canon EOS 7D, 10x Plan Fluor and 40x Plan.

Good catch!

The cracked shell of the arcella leaking protoplasm at 3:07 is particularly interesting

Very nice, I have not tried darkfield on the Microstar IV yet, how are you doing it?

I designed a 3D printed filter holder that fits onto the Microstar condenser and a number of 3D printed filter inserts. It works relatively okay and lets me experiment with different filter shapes quickly. The main issue is light leakage through the plastic, which leads to less contrast. The ideal material for the filter stops is metal (conductors have zero light leakage); there are reasonably priced online laser cutting services, and I'm considering having aluminum filters made eventually.

It's my first time finding amoeba and I was quite excited. Do you happen to know what the first critter in the video is? I've never seen one entirely covered in cilia before.

Possibly Litonotus cygnus

Do note that due to the fact that we view most ciliates from on top, the side cilia (from our viewpoint at 90 degrees) are the most apparent, yet cilia cover most of the ciliates.
