Video of a rotifer egg hatching
Video of a rotifer egg hatching
I was fortunate enough to find a rotifer egg just before it hatched and managed to capture the whole thing, hope y'all like the video!
Also, I've been unable to identify the rotifer with any of the keys I have, so if anyone has any ideas that would be much appreciated

That is a great catch! Very clear video. Like how you followed it to see what it would do.

Re: Video of a rotifer egg hatching
A great video - congratulations! There are not may people, who were lucky enough to watch the hatching of a rotifer!
Identifying of rotifers is a hard task and is probably only possible with adult animals. But you pictured the teeth of the rotifer very well. As the teeth are very specific, you may have a chance to identify the species by examining them!

Very cool thanks for sharing!
Re: Video of a rotifer egg hatching
Thank you all for the kind words
Thank you, I recently learned that this is the pharynx of the Rotifer, called the mastax, and the ridges are called trophi. Apparently the mastax is the only fossilizable part of a rotifer. I'll have a look at some keys later this week to see if I can come up with some sort of an identification.Michael Müller wrote: ↑Sat Aug 01, 2020 9:38 am
