Amphileptus pleurosigma

#1 Post by janvangastel » Wed Aug 12, 2020 3:59 pm

I think this ciliate, length a little less then 300 microns (ruling out A. Claparedii, which is smaller), is Amphileptus pleurosigma, because it has a relatively short, only very little extensible neck (ruling out A. procerus), two rows of CV's (one on each side of the body) and two macro nucleii.

(direct visiblility didn't work).

Very nicely shot video, though I'm afraid I can't help confirm the ID. Thanks for sharing.

Jan has it right. :) It's a pleurostomatid ciliate (flattened cell tapered at each end, two macronuclear nodules, extrusomes on ventral edge). Body is roughly sigmoidal, with contractile vacuoles in two rows along the ventral and dorsal surfaces. Size is in the right range.
