Thysanomorpha bellerophon - a strange and rare ciliate
Hi,
some time ago I was lucky to find Thysanomorpha bellerophon (PENARD 1914), which was seen very seldom since its discovery.
It lives hidden in the mud of nutritious ponds and can only be found while it is swimming freely:
Fig. 1: T. bellerophon, swimming
The ciliates is easily recognized by a band of noticeable papillae around the body which are contracted tentacles:
Fig. 2: T. bellerophon, contracted tentacles
If you wait long enough, the animal calms down and the tentacles are expanded. With this tentacles the ciliate anchors itself to the substrate and waits for pray.
Fig. 3 : T. bellerophon, expanded tentacles and waiting for pray
A closer look to the tentacles shows, that the tip of them is filled with extrusomes, which can be fired onto pray if touched:
Fig. 4: T. bellerophon, tentacles; the inset show a tentacle while expanding
I could observe, that T. bellerophon - in my micro-aquarium - hunted only gastrotrichs. Other ciliates are ignored, even if accidentally killed. The video shows T. bellerophon freely swimming and - anchored down - the hunting of a gastrotrich (Ichthydium sp,):
I observed the animals in a micro-aquarium for nearly two weeks. A more detailed report of the observations con be found in the German forum for microscopy: https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/index. ... c=37505.0.
Best regards
Michael

Wonderful!
Michael, are you able to find specimens readily? The ciliatologist Bill Bourland has been studying these, and I'm sure he would be very interested in having samples to work on. I can give his contact info., if you don't have it already.

Thank you for the warm and encouraging words!
@Bruce:
If there is no strong seasonal effect, it's no problem to collect and separate some specimens. Martin Kreuz told me, that Bill Bourland is - to his knowledge - the only one, who already made photos of Thysanomorpha bellerophon, but I had no contact with Bill. It would be great, if you could open a contact to him. I'll send you a private message with my mail address.

Yes, images of this oddity are extremely rare. Bill has some, which he posted on the old micro*scope site, and a Belgian friend has also found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RldPbvA4tuY It's a ciliate I would LOVE to encounter!Michael Müller wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:24 amThank you for the warm and encouraging words!

Yes, Michel-Marie has an unusual artistic vision. He composes the music, too. Another one of the same organism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2l_6DL-ssY

Thanks to all again and especially for the reference to the nice video of Michel-Marie!
I didn't expect so much interested post! I observed the little friends for nearly two months in divers micro-aquariums and collected several hours of video material. If I find some time to edit it, I'll publish a continuation soon.
Best regards
Michael
