Freshwater Dinoflagellates

#1 Post by Wes » Mon Sep 14, 2020 7:09 am

I somehow always thought dinoflagellates are restricted to marine habitats so was quite surprised to find such an abundance of them yesterday. This new pond I sampled is crazy full of life, it has everything from freely floating rotifer colonies to Volvox to gigantic red mites.

Great catch and video. I too thought they were only marine ... thanks for the info!

+1 for the lovely video !

The author of the Wikipedia page tells us:
dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, but they also are common in freshwater habitats.
... and now we see it to be true.

Thanks to all for the interest and nice comments, I certainly didn't expect to see these organisms.

When I posted the Dinoflagellates on another microforum I was approached by a SEM enthusiast about whether I could send him a sample of the organisms. So I did and sometime later he came back with a bunch of amazing SEM images. Here is one of them.

Shouldn't the sem image have a flagella? The photoshop coloring is really good.

It should, at least I saw them with my scope but maybe this particular individual had lost its flagellum.

.
That is neat to have that done from one of your samples!

A treat to see such structural detail
