Small stalked organisms

#1 Post by DonSchaeffer » Mon Sep 14, 2020 3:30 pm

In my grass culture I'm still finding some large ciliates that are not moving. Today I found a loose colony of stalked organisms attached to some debris. They were joined briefly by a full sized rotifer which made comparison easy. Anybody have an idea what these stalked organisms are?

Nice find! The little stalks guys are peritrich ciliates, probably in the genus Opercularia.

Thanks Bruce. I've been seeing a lot of these, many dormant. I kept thinking they were rotifers until I saw the comparison side by side.
