A few recent findings

#1 Post by Wes » Sun Sep 20, 2020 4:59 pm

I didn't feel like making individual threads for these microbe findings of the past couple of weeks so enjoy the video dump

Diatoms, a fast amoeba, worm on LSD and an unidentified ciliate.

Nice videos! My favorite is the amoeba, though your unidentified ciliate looks very interesting. Don't suppose you have any footage of it at a higher magnification?

Thanks 75'

The ciliate video was taken with a 40x phase objective at 2x optovar magnification so a total of 800x, but thats the highest I went.

What kind of lighting is that on the unidentified ciliate?

Edit: Wow, for some reason it didn't show me your last reply in this thread. Already answered!

Is it slowed down, or in glycerin or something? I've never seen cilia move like that before.

Yes, it was slowed down with methylcellulose, video is at normal speed tho.

Does that work well? I've been looking for something to slow down the little zoomers enough to get better pictures.

Methylcellulose works very well in my hands, I definitely recommend it.

Very Very cool. Nothing like nature's design and technology coming together as a creative form.

Very nice Wes. I have also used methylcellulose, it slows down the movements a lot, but to me it looks a little unnatural sometimes. It can be the only way to be able to make a video of some creatures though.

Thanks Jan and you are right the movement looks unnatural but some of those critters are bullet fast. Not only I can't shoot them I can't see them for more than a second in one place under normal conditions.
