First light with EPI DIC

#1 Post by lumonicphoto » Sun Nov 01, 2020 11:56 pm

Got Epi rigged up on my Optiphot thanks to Scarodactyl and ebay. First capture out of the setup, this is using the Point Grey Flea camera, I need to make an adapter to hold my dSLR

This is the surface of an old PentiumD I ripped off it's substrate. I figure about 1000x considering the camera sensor size.

Glad to see it's up and running! Epi DIC is a lot of fun, even a little underrated in amateur circles I think.

Cool image. I suspect it might be spectacular with focus stacking?

Agree with Scarodactyl on the value of reflected light microscopy. Amateurs have spent over 150 years learning how to prepare specimens for transmitted light. Seems that today's near glut of high quality wafer inspection microscopes, bright pinpoint LED sources, digital photography and focus stacking, and possibly reflective substrates for transmitted specimens could open up a whole new chapter for hobbyists?

Your SEM is possibly the ultimate reflected imaging scope (slightly envious, mostly applauding, fellow hobbyist).

Part if the issue is the sensor is so small you are seeing a lot of the azimuth effects from the nomarksi prism since it is massively magnified compared to the eyepiece. I am thinking this is actually way beyond 1000x after comparing the two images. I need to make an adapter for my 5DIII or my 5DII which has been modified for full spectrum.

I have thought about image stacking, I have a tiny 30w mitsubishi servo which would be good for this.
