I thought I would share images of an interesting rotifer I observed. I don't think it is "rare" but it appears to be infrequently documented. I found a few North American observations and a couple papers from Asia. I post to iNaturalist and my observations are the only ones.

Was it in a regular pond?

The pond was created in 1908 when the San Vicente Lumber Company flooded a section of Newell Creek to create a holding pond for logs at their sawmill. The sawmill closed in 1923. After 1923 the land around the pond was used for a variety of purposes, mostly agricultural. In 1982 the property was donated to the Land Trust of Santa Cruz. It is currently preserved open space.
