Antique Diatom Arrangement

#1 Post by KurtM » Wed Jan 06, 2021 8:58 pm

Though I check in pretty much daily, I haven't participated in this forum a lot lately so thought I'd offer the results of a little mini-project that kept me amused on a recent rainy day. It started with an antique diatom slide that I won in an auction on you-know-where, which I am told is "by Hardman from the UK", labeled "Stictodiscus californicus" from "Santa Monica", and that's all I know about it at this time. I imagine it's circa 1890, give or take a decade or two? It's always awesome to hold a 100 year old slide in your hands, or at least it is to me. Plus it is, as you see, a very neat little arrangement, and one I am not averse to showing off a little. The project was to photograph it in a manner that gives the viewer the next best thing to holding it in his or her own hands for close inspection, and then having a look at it under the microscope.

Shooting information is given with each image below.

Agree, lovely diatoms and great detail. Do like the arrangement as well.

Must say you led me on a merry chase looking for 'Strictodiscus californicus' as my browser (perhaps sensibly) does not check scientific names :)

MichaelG., I failed to notice that you gave a link to an article on the diatomist Hardman - thought it was a tag line URL I guess. Thank you, it's most interesting! And in it, there's one point made that's particularly near and dear to my heart, and that I'd like to once again commend to the attention of this congregation:

Excellent images Kurt. What microscope have you mounted your diverse objectives on?

Howdy Wes. I'm currently using an Olympus BHS BH-2 with LED lamp and Zeiss rotating stage.
