Ciliate frenzy.
Ciliate frenzy.
This particular sample was obtained from a biofilm growing around a decomposing wasp floating on water. The estimated bacterial count is in the millions.
Effects obtained with Darkfield overimposed on POL filters with the condenser shifted for oblique effect...ps I ran out of space to include the Rheinberg filters too

Beautiful! Nothing brings out Tetrahymena like a dead arthropod.
Re: Ciliate frenzy.
Nice vid-I’ve found run off from my worm farm to be pretty spectacular for crazy levels of motile bacteria and ciliates and nematodes-looks nice in dark field at 100x as the bacteria twinkle like stars in the night...

Re: Ciliate frenzy.
I know about bacteria twinkling like stars. To me it looks like the firmament.
Re: Ciliate frenzy.
I agree DonSchaeffer -I reckon dark field picks up bacteria at lower mags better than phase contrast even-especially if you just want to quantify bacterial activity in soil or compost-I can often see it at 4x even-though it’s more of a shimmering unless it’s a really sharp 4x like a fluorite or Apochromat-
