Aeolosoma hunting Urocentrum turbo

#1 Post by nucleoPhil » Sat Jan 16, 2021 10:25 pm

Does anyone have any experience observing these freshwater worms? They're starting to really fascinate me with their varied behaviors. I read somewhere where detritivore species are being looking into for water treatment as they can go through so much sludge. My kind of microbe! This one was hunting down Urocentrum turbos zipping around it. Really seems like it is stalking them!

here's some sessile forms I found earlier this fall. From the hand lens I mistook them for hydra...

Great catch, I haven't encountered that particular species, but have encountered A. Hemprichi a lot lately, no predatory behavior more of a filter feeding behavior. I can look at them for hours, i uploaded a video that took me 2 hrs following one around to catch how it reproduces via Paratomy.I read the report you mentioned on regards to how beneficial they are specially public in sewer systems , particularly Aeolosoma hemprichi.
This one had 3 sections and I couldn't help to relate it as the possible inspiration for "The Human Centipede" movie

These are neat finds. However they are not actually Aeolosoma, which like you can see in Plasmid's video have broad muscular prostomia to scrounge up food and are typically full of coloured oil droplets. Instead these are naidids. The first one is a Chaetogaster, which are noted as predators of a variety of organisms like ciliates and rotifers. I am not quite sure of the second one offhand...possibly Aulophorus or Dero?

Thanks so much for the clarification. No wonder I was struggling with an ID! I was assuming their suction feeding and bristles was enough to place them into Aeolosoma. I found some more film I took of the worms in the second video. I don't recall them ever building any case or shelters.
