I was looking at some old images and found this from January 2011.
From a local lake and it reminded me that the best, only ?, place to find subjects in late Winter (everything at ground level covered in deep snow) is in water.
Will take a trip to the lake later today and see what I can find; will have to break through the ice!

Re: Closterium
Nice photograph, sharp and detailed.
Re: Closterium
Nice one, Diatoms are cool!!
The water samples I picked are full of them, but to small for my 40X via direct projection.
Tomorrow I will receive a CFN 100/0.25 Oil, I will put it to work.

Thanks Jan and Seta.
The 100x should work fine. I should have mentioned that this image was actually at 125x (40 + 1.25 +2.5). This is probably an easier way to get this mag. than by using a 100x objective.
Seta: I'm the guy that ID'd your Bibionidae on PMG.

Ahh OK ..difficult to identify who is who in different forums with different user names..
When the time comes I will upgrade to a 40/1.30 fluor or 60/1.40 Apo instead of a 100x because of this, seems more versatile and resolving power should be the same
