These pics were a sample taken from the middle of my freshwater aquarium filter. Ive realized that samples from there have more diverse organisms that those taken from the actual tank which usually contain a lot of algae interfering with the viewing anyway.
Still figuring out the best lighting/saturation/exposure settings...
The last pic might be a heliozoan...

Re: Fish Tank Filter
Hi Houston,
Those are very interesting photos... The was a good idea you had of looking at what is contained in the filter... Makes perfect sense if you think about it, all of the water has to pass through it, trapping whatever inside.. Very clever...

Re: Fish Tank Filter
Have you compared the biodiversity between your filter vs a plant from the tank? Filter may concentrate lighter floating protist, as opposed to sinking/attaching protists.
I am guessing you will see a lot protists attached to plants as well. Such as hydra, ostracod, water bear and whatever that is big/heavy or like to anchor to plants.
You can try to use flash or LED torch and add a right angle prism under condenser to direct light up (while keep passing your stock light).
