Flagellate from a moor - pressed out of moss
Flagellate from a moor - pressed out of moss
Hi together,
here a photo an video of an interesting flagellate, moving around by constantly deforming it's body. It may be a Distigma proteus.
The sample is from a moor, pH ca. 4,5, pressed out of moss.

Nice catch!
Tinkered with your image in an attempt to highlight the flagellum (hope that is alright)

Lovely image Bob, never had the pleasure of seeing one of these. I was on the moors the other day looking for whinchats and took a few samples of very peaty water so hopefully I'll find one.

Hi Glen,
yes of cause and you were successfull too! To me it looks as if there are two flagella.
The photos and videos were made on the inverted microscope with bicyle bulb illumination, the sample sandwiched between petri dish and bottom of a smaller plastic petri dish. Due to the slide holder in use I wasn't able to use the 40 plan corr. for petri dish use, so the image quality is a bit limited.
This was from a new sample. It was accompanied by a sample that has been sitting in a marmelade jar for a year. Very different life in the old sample, but still very rich.
The moor is in bicycle distance from here, but the samples came to me by mail...
My own samples from there were not as interesting.
Here a Saturnella saturnus from the old sample.

Very interesting - I mostly find desmids when squeezing moss. Nice picture.
