Algae

#1 Post by JimT » Fri Jul 31, 2015 11:24 pm

Not sure what algae this is. At first I thought a straight Closterium but I think too big. Size about 580 X 60 um's. Lots of chloroplast moving about.

Five image stack, DIY DIC filter, Canon 60D, 10x obj.

Beautiful image! The color, detail, and texture are excellent. Masterful oblique illumination.

both terminal ends have those delightful dancing crystaloids..this is a desmid for certain! I guess we can look at image galleries of desmids to get an ID...at least a genus level ID. I'll offer my 2 cents ( read that as stick my neck out!) tommorow.

thanks for this image, charlie guevara

Thanks all.
Charlie G. save your 2 cents. I think Closterium which can be crescent or straight. Definitely could see the dancing crystaloids.

I have observed closteriums before from a few of my pond samples but I never took a photo. Take a look at closterium nitzsch, perhaps one of those.
