Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Not as clear as it could be as I actuated the camera manually. I need to use the EOS utility to activate the camera without touching it. When I get a chance I will be posting a lot of pics as I have been working to optimize the images.
Just thought I would post this to show I am not only a "lurker". LOL I do a lot of work but just don't take the time to document it online. I am always changing objectives and adapters trying to get the ideal set-up.
Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Very good photo! By the way, until you get your your EOS utility set up, you can use the time delay on your camera. Or a remote shutter release if you have one. But I think your photo taken through your stereo scope, at least to my eyes, appears very clear and detailed. Thank you for sharing.

I bought a remote but it never seemed to work correctly. Thanks for the complement. Insects are more a priority than protists. I have been doing a lot of work with a specific species of ant. They are incredibly tiny and as such any slight movement during photographing results in some blur. The photos never look as good as through the eyepiece. Though I have good luck videooing ptotists. Hopefully the set-up I am working on now will improve the images. I also recently acquired a stacking rpogram so we will see how that improves the images.
Several of the individuals on this forum take some very nice photos. It is an art in many respects.

Wow--what a creature! I also think the pic is quite sharp in places, and where it isn't it's more a depth-of-field issue than movement.
Stereo scopes do have the "drawback" that the 2D pics can't look as good as the live 3D view.

Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Yes that is true. The camera can't compensate like the human eye for that true 3D effect.

Hi Einman,
I think you did a great job on this.. Looks plenty sharp to my old eyes...

Einman, first off I would be proud of an image like that. Secondly, I don't know what EOS you have. I have a Canon so maybe I can help with the EOS utility or the remote shutter. What seems to be the problem?
Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
I'm sure your camera has a shutter timer (on mine there is a choice of 2 or 12 s) that you can use until you set up the EOS utility.einman wrote:I bought a remote but it never seemed to work correctly.

Nice bug...is that a type of: 'click bug'...those markings remind me of click bugs. As with others, to my sense it's a great image...I feel like I'm on it's back rideing it off to the spice mines in:"Dune"! thanks for the microscopy einman.
Are you aquainted with Charlie Eismans forum: "Bug Tracks"...Charles does wonderful macro/stereo insect studies..a very kind person...he always answers coments.
Every so often I encounter a huge (compared to regular click bugs) gray click bug..it's throax markings really look like large white eyes. all the best, charlie guevara

I looked it up and it's a Spined Oak Borer, so I guess it grinds rather than clicks.

Good capture, we have plenty of them in my area. They can leave behind a pile of saw dust.

Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Thanks everyone for the complements and the offers of assistance. I have the EOS utility installed on my new laptop. I lost my original in the house fire. It seems to be working correctly. So.. I should be getting pictures soon. The issue was getting a laptop then installing it. My desktop is not near my lab benches. My daughter fancies herself a youtube star and keeps robbing my camera equipment. So I am attempting to purchase a used Canon EOS on E-bay and dedicate to my microscopes.
Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Make sure the Canon you purchase supports remote shooting.
Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
If I may add to what JimT said, also make sure that it supports "silent mode" to avoid vibration from the mechanical shutter, as I think not all Canons that support live view also have this feature:

Thanks Crater Eddie. It's a work in progress.
Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
That is really good for identification, I bet BugGuide.net would like to have that one. What is the magnification?

The Canon remote shooting is great as you have discovered. Good job stacking. The secret is take lots of images - I usually don't to my regret
Re: Elaphidion Mucronatum Using Amscope Stereoscope
Not sure about the magnification as I was playing around with multiple camera settings and magnifications. My objective was just to try and get a clearer image.
