Wood Borer Larvae:

#1 Post by Rodney » Sun Aug 09, 2015 5:45 pm

One of our locals. I think a species of Bess beetle larvae. Under stereo scope at 7x with a little camera zoom. Specimen length is aprox. 7 cm`s.

Excellent image and beautiful colors. The parts that are out of focus could be helped by a focus stack.

Agree with gekko. Stacking software is free - worth a go. No need to post until you are happy with the results ;)

Thanks, I do agree that photo stacking is a very valuable tool. This photo may be a little better, single shot with no photo stacking. I like to test my scopes out with no photo stacking. I do notice light refraction.

Another very nice image. And I think now your field of view is larger than it was in your first posts, which is very good.

I use a free piece of software that is designed to use with the 'Digicam' type (Toupcam) USB microscope cameras, it's called 'Toupview'.. It's completely und unconditionally free to download and use. You can use it without a camera attached (all my microscope photo's are taken and stacked when necessary with it). It's a piece of cake to use, just open your set of 'stack slice' pictures and run the 'EDF' (enhanced depth of field - focus stacking in other words) option with your constituent pictures - you can choose between and set the parameters for, 3 different stacking methods.
It's very fast, very easy to use, and when I compared it to a couple of others, it's definitely as good! Mainly though, it's extremely easy to use to produce a good stack.

Worth a look - for sure, 'Toupview' (camera not necessary to use this.

That guy's got a raspy-looking head suitable for a borer! Nice pics.

Thanks for info on stacking software...looks very useful.
