An unexpected bonus!

#1 Post by Cyclops » Tue Aug 11, 2015 1:45 pm

I was showing the kids some prepared slides of plant cells and came across something on one of the slides. It turns out that some kind of mite has crawled onto the outside of the cover slip and died. It was orange/yellow in colour, could just see it with the naked eye.

Initially yes but it is very small so for this photo I used my 20x to give 100x total

Looks like a type of bird mite to me, but anyway I get the mites most of the time each year walking through the woods. We call them red bugs. You may guess where they itch the most, very uncomfortable. A drop of kerosene or diesel fuel will kill them off the testicles, but you may want to try other means that is prescribed for safe use. The poison permethrin in a prescribed solution will also kill mites that attack humans and pets. The itch doesn`t stop until the toxin has worn off.

Nice bonus capture.
