Protists ID help Needed

#1 Post by JimT » Wed Aug 12, 2015 8:43 pm

Here is another new one for me from the pond sample I recently collected. Cilia in front to move with, seems to eat small algae, ~140X110 um's. ID appreciated.

Taken with Canon 60D and 20X obj. First image is dark field and the second is with the UGF filter.

Nice image.

Have you had a look in the The Ciliate Diversity Chart?

Thanks all.

75RR, thanks for the site. I have saved it. With a quick look I didn't see anything that looked like my mystery organism.

Very beautiful images (both!). Your DF is excellent, and your UFG filter is working great, I think. By looking at images of cilates, to my eyes it resembles somewhat Plagiopyla or Ependardia but, knowing my pathetic identification ability, most probably it is neither.

Gekko, I think you win the prize for this ones ID. Looks like it could be a Plagiopyla.

Also thanks for the compliments re the images.

identification via a single photo can be very difficult as evidenced by the philodina of 75RR. Until the corona was extended we went down a different path. Videos and/or multiple photos are required.

That is not to say Gekko is not correct. I just would not make that conclusion from 2 shots.

As I said, I am most likely (actually, almost surely) wrong (as I am most of the time :( ).

Einman, I think I said before that you are my "Go to guy" for ID's. Anyway, not that important as it was a first for me and that is the best part about observing new pond samples-new organisms :)

Hey I am not the go to guy!!! NOT ME!! LOL

I was just saying and not being critical--honestly--that a single pic is difficult. Videos and Multiple pics are much easier. I spend more time on insects than protists. Insects are so much easier. Even the smaller species of dacetines etc are easier than many protists.
