yes

I use one of three techniques or a combination of them in Photoshop, depending on which I think will be easier.

1.) I make a duplicate background layer (by highlighting the background layer in the layers palette and clicking duplicate layer. Then I add a Gaussian blur to it or I paint over after sampling the background.
I then use the eraser to delete the blur/paint that is over the image I want to keep.

2.) I use the magnetic Lasso Tool and then the normal Lasso Tool (with the + & – to fine tune), to select the image. I then choose inverse in “Select” and fill in the background colour.

3.) I just use a brush, graduating its diameter and hardness and opacity and paint up to the image.

Photoshop has a massive amount of zoom, I make the most of it.
