Exceptionally clean background, has the background been removed?

In addition, I am learning "RETARDATION PLATES".

Does the sentence "it will add or subtract about 137 nm (550/4=137.5 nm)" mean to shift the spectrum?

Yeah, I cheated a little by replacing the dirty background.

The waveplates produce an optical path difference. Petrologists and material scientists use various compensators with the assistance of a Michel-Lévy Interference Chart to obtain the birefringence of the sample which then allows them to determine the material they are looking at. This is vital in the fields of mining engineering and various material science disciplines.

For me, it looks nice in photos. I do not own a petrological microscope.

Not cheating at all. Adding or subtracting pertinent information might be, but rubbing out needless distraction to better present the subject is OK. Says me, anyway.

I do add and subtract information occasionally as well. Diatoms often have imperfections or mountant inclusions that I do not want. I have stamped out cracks in diatoms, fibres in slides, and the example goes on. I would say it is an acceptable touchup, I have never totally reworked something to a point that it looked completely different to the original z-stack.
