LAOWA 90mm 2.8 2x:

[…]

I have to say I'm very happy and surprised by the LAOWA lens!
.

It does look excellent

I must have been asleep … I had never heard of LAOWA until today

Thank you! I was very skeptical, after all many Chinese lens brands are uhm... let's say their image quality reflects the price (not in a good way) but their APO series lenses are amazing. Way better than any reversed enlarger lens or so.
Handling is very much like the Sigma 150mm 2.8 APO on full frame, so outdoors a tripod isn't a bad idea. But in the studio it's fantastic!
A bit prone to flare if used outside too. But the sharpness and chromatic correction are both just fantastic!

I'm sure it'll do great at 3x as well but definitely not in combination with a Raynox, that edge distortion makes stacking pretty much impossible.

Hi,
Very nice photos!
I have yet to figure out how to best close the gap between 2x and 3.5x
I use for that a Mitu 5x with TL=100mm.
Best, ADi

Thank you, that's a good idea - I'm trying with the DCR-250 at 11cm, should work rather well!

Hi,
Mitutoyo 5x with DCR 250 at 11.5cm - not as good/sharp/CA free as the LAOWA but pretty good result!
very interesting!
Have you already read Robert's tests?

It could be close to Laowa 100mm 2X, I think.

It's probably even a bit better because the 90mm 2x is the new version that was design specifically for mirrorless cameras and with an internal focussing as opposed to the open barrel design of the 100mm 2x. So it's quite a bit more resistent to flare.

I also have a Minolta 5400 scanner but I don't want to open it to remove the lens as the Laowa is auch a versatile lens!

On thing that I find a bit disappoing is the performance of the Mitutoyo 2x APO lens - from what I've seen it has a lot of CAs and distortions on the edge, much worse than the 5x on 11.5cm extension!

I'll try 10cm on the DCR 250 next and then I'll try to get it down to 9cm (if possible) - then I wouldn't need to fiddle around with extension tubes on the Laowa

Yes, Mitu 2x has a problem with CA, but it can be removed in a simple way.
I have taken this fly with it:
