Zoo- and Phyto- Plankton

#1 Post by geo_man » Tue Oct 03, 2023 3:39 pm

I dragged a plankton net for 5 minutes in Shinnecock Bay, Long Island and was surprised with variety of my catch!

....during incoming or outgoing tide?

Outgoing tide after quite a bit of rain and wind; only fish we caught were 2 sea robins.

It'd be interesting to see biodiversity differences between incoming and outgoing critters. Also the density of toxic algaes. Is that pseudonitzchia I see in one of your shots?

I like living in the desert, but I miss the ocean too.

The ocean is nice! I will have to tow it in the ocean to see the difference. I haven't identified the different diatoms but you could very well be correct as we do localized red tides in the heat of the summer. Cheers!

I'm finding the phytoplankton really interesting. Here are a few more in phase and DF. Cheers!

Wow! That's awesome diversity! On Long Island no less!

My plankton drag in Puget Sound last year yielded far fewer varieties!
