An enjoyable first sample of 12/2023 outdoor mesocosm

#1 Post by charlie g » Fri Dec 08, 2023 2:48 am

Hi all, happy holidays to all.

A simple wide mouth plastic jar scoop sample of my outdoor pond/stream mesocosm ( it's been going for years now..red squirrels punctured 2/3rds of the 38 ft length stream component water liner, winter 2022...sighh) on the very first wetmount slide I slurped up from the sample jar...wonderful meiofauna and protists. Please enjoy a visit to this central NY/ 12/23 freshwater microscopy.

I was pleased to capture two Chl;orohydra specimens on this slide...quite close together ( one with five tentacles, the other with six tentacles).

So too were two active Chaetogaster limnaei , oligochaete worms captured on this first sample slide...as with the two hydras, these worms must have been

quite close together in the algae matt I jar collected.

The Paramecium bursaria ( I say: P. buraria as the PubMed link Bruce Taylor posted in forum recently...well it stated 'the other Paramecium with symbiote unicellular algae is quite rare.)...seemed to have morphologically

similar sybiotic unicellular algae like the Chlorohydra on this wetmount slide.

And so many protists observed, I noted this Actinospharium amoeboid large protozoan was quite plentiful all about this wet mount slide. Some hosted endosymbiotic dinoflagelates I'm sensing.

Again, happy holidays to all, please enjoy this 12/23 outdoor sample, charlie guevara/fingerlakes/US

The two meiofauna/worms show very clear gross anatomy...their mouths open and close at times.

Please note image capture #184 depicts a hydra with six tentacles, the other image captures are of a five tentacle hydra.

I sense these inclusions nested within this Actinosphaerium amoeboid protozoan are not engulfed food...it would be fun to keep these large protozoans in a well slide..and follow up opn what becomes of these inclusions.

The high magnification image suggests these inclusions are endosymbiotic dinoflagelates.

I enjoyed these. I like the way you illuminate them (I guess from above somehow). I'd love to see some motion pictures.

Some of these are quite similar to what I have seen using an inverted microscope or bottom illuminated stereoscope.
